About the project

Porcelain Tales is a 3D platform puzzle strategy game where you take on the role of a tiny garden gnome brought to life by a generous witch to help her collect her most desired objects. Made of porcelain, you must be cautious while exploring the witch's B&B world. Your ability to hide in narrow crannies and move as quietly as a mouse is essential. Furthermore, you can carry objects six times your size. Throughout your adventure in the B&B, you'll encounter numerous obstacles to overcome and various objects to collect. Finding your way home won't be easy as you wander through the maze of the B&B.

I created Porcelain Tales in collaboration with a team of 17 people for the Game Design & Development minor at Hogeschool Rotterdam. In this project, I took on the role of an artist with a focus on UX/UI design and sound design.

Wireframing

The theme of the game was fairy tales. I took this into account during the wireframing process, incorporating elements like a bookmark-style menu.

Sound design

In addition to being a UX/UI designer, I also served as a sound designer for Porcelain Tales. Together with a select group of team members, we recorded sound clips to be used in the game.

Below, you can find a video that provides more information about this aspect.

Hi-Fi

Developing

As a UX/UI designer, I worked closely with the developers. Once the hi-fi prototypes were created, I could send them to the developers so that they could start building them.

Porcelain Tales - Learning points

Porcelain Tales was an assignment for the minor in Game Design & Development. It was a challenging yet fun game to work on. This was my first time applying UX/UI design to a 3D desktop game, and I am very satisfied with the final result. I completed this assignment with a team of 17 individuals, and I am happy that we were able to create a game together in 14 weeks, currently boasting over 200,000 downloads! Throughout this project, I learned the following:

  • I learned to apply UX/UI design in a 3D environment.
  • I learned to collaborate within a large group (17 individuals). This was great, although it could be challenging at times, especially when not everyone was aligned on decisions.
  • I learned the importance of communication, particularly when working between two departments. During this assignment, I assumed the role of an artist with a focus on UX/UI design. As an artist, I frequently engaged in discussions with the game designers to determine which elements should be incorporated into the design. Additionally, I communicated with developers to ensure these elements could be implemented in the game.
